Lindos: Medieval Village

Lindos is a medieval village on the island of Rhodes that is made up of a network of cobbled streets amid whitewashed houses. Above the town rises the acropolis of Lindos, offering spectacular views of the surrounding harbors and coastline. Lindos beach and Saint Pauls beach are only a short distance from the town center.

Top 3 highlights of Lindos:

1. Acropolis of Lindos

The Acropolis of Lindos towers above the village. Flanked by silvery pine trees, it offers spectacular views of the surrounding harbors and coastline. It displays Byzantine architecture on the outside and 2nd century BC Doric architecture on the inside and has been partially reconstructed to convey its former greatness. The site also houses a 20 columned Hellenistic stoa and the ancient fresco filled Byzantine Church of Agios Ionnis. Behind the Acropolis is the 4th century Temple to Athena, the site most important ancient ruin. Perched on a 116m high rock, visitors can choose to climb or to get up to the Acropolis via donkey ride. The hike up can be strenuous at times. Since there is no shade at the top, visitors should wear a hat, sunscreen, and bring plenty of water.

2. Lindos Houses

Lindos features many 17th and 18th century naval captains stone houses with carved relief facades, intricately painted wooden ceilings, and raised platform beds in the living room used for both sleeping and lounging. The furnishings, carpets, and plates are mostly Turkish in style. Almost all of the houses in Lindos are of historic interest. Many of these houses were restored in the 60’s and 70’s by artists, musicians, and writers from across the world that wanted to preserve the unique beauty of the architecture. They are full of antiques and artifacts collected by the owners that have restored the houses. Many have turned into summer homes for the wealthy and some are even available to rent.

3. Beaches

There are many beaches to enjoy in Lindos that appeal to a variety of tourists. Main Beach, located east of the Acropolis, is a sandy beach with shallow water which makes it a great spot for families with children. If you are looking for something more adult friendly, there is Pallas Beach located at the western tip of the bay. Its smaller but is lined with tavernas. St. Pauls Bay is a 10 minute walk from town on the western side of the Acropolis. The walk is worth it. Its a quieter beach that features beautiful turquoise water.

A visit to Lindos does not come cheap. Accommodation can be expensive and hotels are often fully booked so its best to reserve a room ahead of time if you plan to stay here.

Nanuku Auberge Resort Fiji in full clean-up mode

Nanuku Auberge Resort Fiji general manager, Mark Stanford has advised while his resort is “a bit of a mess right now” with the resort’s gardens and beachfront bearing the brunt of TC Winston over the weekend, the resort has not suffered structural damage and is aiming to be ready to resume full operations as early as 01 March 2016.

Mr Stanford said his first inspection of the resort on Sunday morning with his engineering team revealed extensive damage to the resort’s foreshore by huge wind-driven waves and several trees had been uprooted and general foliage and plants flattened.

The bure at the resort nearby private airstrip was also damaged in the storm.

“But apart from some bamboo fencing on the resort, it appears our club house and villas have all escaped structural damage which makes us very lucky indeed,” Mr Stanford said.

Having been given advance notice by the Fijian government meteorological services, Mr Stanford and his well-rehearsed management team took swift action to evacuate guests and ensure all staff were safely with their families before putting the resort under protective wraps as the cyclone bore down on the Pacific Harbour region.

“We are in already in full clean-up mode and we doing all in our power to hopefully be ready to accept our guests and resume full service by 01 March,” Mr Stanford said.

Mr Stanford cautioned that while his team is pulling out all the stops, several factors still need to be taken into account.

“Our staffing levels have been impacted with many of our team having gone home to be with their families and locally sourced supplies will definitely be affected in the short term,” he said.
“Most importantly of all, we need to ensure we are able to operate in a completely safe and comfortable environment.

‘While this was cyclone was one of the biggest, if not the biggest to ever hit Fiji, the Fijian people are extremely resilient and very used to this type of situation – and no more so than at Nanuku where our staff are once again demonstrating their wonderful spirit in the face of adversary.

GULF OF MANNAR MARINE NATIONAL PARK

History

From the past two thousand years the Park is famous for its Pearl Banks of Pinctada Fucata and Pinctada Radiata. Despite of being an expensive activity the extraction of natural Pearls still takes place in the gulf.

Colombo in Sri Lanka and Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) in Tamil Nadu are the prime seaports on the Gulf. These ports can provide lodging for deep-draft vessels whereas the shallow Palk Strait can provide lodging for only small shallow-draft vessels. The Indian Government has been taking steps since July 2005 for creating a deep channel to link the Gulf and the Bay of Bengal by the Sethusamundaram Shipping Canal Project. The enthusiastic promoters of the project lay stress on the advantages of a direct shipping route that joins the East and West coasts of India eliminating the tiring trip around Sri Lanka. Whereas the critiques (environmentalists) argue about the harm these projects are going to cause to the fisheries and sea life of the Gulf and the Palk Strait.

The 21 islets between the Dhanushkodi and Thoothukudi of Tamil Nadu were announced as the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park in the year 1986 and the buffer region was announced as the Biosphere Reserve in the year 1989 for conservational purpose. The Park and the Reserve are considered to have the wealthiest Marine Biological Resources in the whole world.

Best Time To Visit

The weather remains pleasant in the Park throughout the year. It provides a great site for the tourists to see the Marine animals and their habitats.
